Our natural stones

Globalstoneshop offers to all its clients an interesting range of natural stone tiles and finished products. But which are the difference between these natural stones? Where do they come from? Below we answer some of these questions, giving a brief explanation about each type of natural stone that we present on our catalogue.

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Geologists use the term “marble” to refer to metamorphosed limestone; however stonemasons use the term more broadly to encompass unmetamorphosed limestone.

The marble is a fairly hard natural stone that is most commonly used on flooring applications, cladding, some stone-work, sculpture and other applications. The marble we offer at Globalstoneshop are all originally from Spain, which is one of the leading marble manufacturers and exporters in the world.

Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate. Many limestones are composed from skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. Limestone makes up about 10% of the total volume of all sedimentary rocks.

The limestone is a fairly soft natural stone, which is mostly recommended for certain uses such as interior flooring with low use, cladding, stone-work and masonry. The limestones we offer here are mostly from Portugal, but we also offer few limestones from Spain, Germany and Ireland.

Granite

Granite is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock, with a medium grained texture. Granites normally have a pink to grey colour, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. By definition, granite is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz by volume. Granite is almost always massive (lacking internal structures), hard and tough, and therefore it has gained widespread use as a construction stone.

Granite is a very hard natural stone, with considerable resistance capacity to the climate elements. It is most commonly used on flooring, exterior applications and cladding.

The granites we offer here are all originally from Spain, which is a leading country on the manufacturing and export of this type of stone.

Travertine

travertine

Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, and cream-colored varieties. It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the mouth of a hot spring or in a limestone cave. In the latter, it can form stalactites, stalagmites, and other speleothems.

Travertine is a natural stone commonly found on applications such as flooring, wall coverings, interior decoration or cladding. All our travertines are supplied directly from Turkey and Spain.
